After breakfast, proceed to visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most important Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka, believed to house a tooth of the Buddha. The temple is located within the historic Kandy Royal Palace complex, which served as the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings. One of its most notable features is the Sea of Milk — a small ornamental pool within the complex, surrounded by intricate carvings and statues, said to represent the purifying power of the Buddha's teachings.
Next, visit the magnificent Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the world. Originally created as a pleasure garden for Kandyan royalty, it was later developed into a fully-fledged botanical garden under British rule in the 19th century. The gardens are home to over 4,000 species of plants, including many exotic and rare specimens. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the grounds, taking in the beauty and fragrance of the plants and flowers, including the giant Javan fig tree, the spice garden, Palm Avenue, and the orchid house. After breakfast, embark on the scenic Bentota River Safari, a boat ride along the Bentota River, which flows through the town and into the Indian Ocean. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife in their natural habitats, including crocodiles, water monitors, eagles, kingfishers, and other bird species.
Also visit the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, dedicated to the conservation and protection of sea turtles, which are endangered due to habitat destruction, poaching, and fishing-related threats. Learn about the five sea turtle species found in these waters — the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and Leatherback Turtle. The hatchery protects turtle eggs from predators and poachers by collecting them from the beaches and keeping them in protected enclosures until they hatch. After hatching, the baby turtles are kept in tanks for a few days to ensure they are strong enough to survive in the ocean before being released back into the sea. The rest of the day is free to explore Bentota at your own leisure. Overnight in Bentota.
